This session highlights the power of community collaboration and cultural inclusion in fostering empathy for wildlife. Craig Standridge from Northwest Trek Wildlife Park will present Weaving the Basket: A Collaborative Journey with the Nisqually Indian Tribe, a project that integrates Indigenous perspectives into empathy programming to deepen connections between staff, visitors, and wildlife. Julie Ernst and Sarah Wilcox from Lake Superior Zoo will share insights from Documenting the Impact of the Deepening Empathy Community of Practice, a reflective initiative assessing the outcomes and benefits of community-driven empathy programs.

This paper "reports on an evaluation of an empathy-focused Community of Practice (CoP) that engaged 15 regional early childhood professionals (including four zoo preschool staff) in the co-creation of empathy practices that are deepened through a ‘Two-Worlds’ (Indigenous and Western) approach.
