Anthropomorphism is a word that a lot of scientifically-minded people wouldn’t want to touch with a ten-foot pole. So why is it potentially something to be utilized in interactions with zoo and aquarium guests? This article demonstrates that when intentionally utilized as an interpretive tool in combination with other empathy practices during guest interactions, critical anthropomorphism can reduce guest barriers to connection and help them begin to empathize with the animals in our care.
This paper discusses the role of anthropomorphism in interpretation in Zoo Victoria’s Lunar Secret Forest exhibit and its impact on guest behavioral intentions.
